See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows total economic losses from weather- and climate-related extreme events (such as windstorms, flooding, heatwaves, cold spells, droughts or wildfires) per country and per year (since 1980). A moving average for the previous 30 years is added because of the large interannual variability of the losses.
The indicator has shown an irregular trend over the years – although in recent years there has been an upward trend. According to estimates by the EEA, extreme weather- and climate-related events alone have caused direct economic losses in Spain in excess of EUR 95 billion since 1980.
It should be noted that the impact of climate change is very broad, affecting essential economic sectors in different ways; therefore, this impact has been only partially quantified, often through comparative studies.
Despite advances in climate adaptation, mechanisms must be put in place to deal with the unavoidable loss and damage caused by climate change, accounting for both economic loss and damage, and social or ecological damage.
