More protected areas (PAs) are being designated in , which aim to increase PAs by 2% by 2030, bringing the total share of land allocated for . In 2022, there were 8.206 km2 of PAs in Slovenia.
National PAs, designated in accordance with the International Union for Conservation of Nature criteria, covered 13.3 % of Slovenia’s land area in 2024, while Natura 2000 areas accounted for 37.5%, . Between 2022 and 2024, new .
Agricultural intensification, often driven by market pressures and insufficient agri-environmental measures being financed by the common agricultural policy, prioritises food production over biodiversity. In addition, water-dependent habitats, such as wetland, are in poor condition, .
It is therefore crucial that, based on the conservation objectives set out in the national Natura 2000 management plan for 2023–2028, the measures planned are implemented by the entities responsible for them.
For the preservation of biodiversity, more attention will need to be given to updating management practices, improving communication between different stakeholders and raising awareness about the importance of sustainable land and water management.
