See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in gross final energy consumption in Slovenia is slowly increasing, reaching 25.1% in 2023. The most important RESs are wood biomass and hydropower, contributing 47 % and 36 %, respectively, . The increase in the use of RESs is driven by rises in hydropower, solar energy for electricity, and geothermal energy and heat pumps, while the use of wood biomass has decreased. Wood biomass is mainly used in households for heating. It has a negative effect on air quality, which is why policies are in place to make the use of wood biomass more efficient through building renovation and . The reduction in final energy consumption (11% lower in 2023 than in 2005) is also contributing to the increase in the share of RESs.
The main challenges related to the RES share are the decrease in wood biomass consumption and the large share of the transport and industrial sectors in final energy consumption, as in these sectors the potential for RES penetration is much smaller than in electricity production and construction. Another great challenge is the large area of the country protected by Natura 2000. These are all reasons that Slovenia’s RES share target for 2030 is .
