Slovakia successfully met its 2020 energy efficiency target under the EU directive (Directive 2012/27/EU), yet achieving the more ambitious 2030 objectives will be significantly more challenging. As a result, the final version of the Updated Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan outlines higher targets for both primary and final energy consumption.
Since 2014, Slovakia’s energy consumption has shown a generally upward trend – interrupted only by the COVID-19 crisis – reaching levels in 2021 that were similar to those of 2010. Encouragingly, a downward shift was observed between 2022 and 2023. The industrial sector, the country’s largest energy consumer, has recorded steady reductions in final energy use, although further progress will hinge on deploying innovative technologies and accelerating electrification. In the building sector, energy use has risen by nearly 50 % since 2014. Despite ongoing renovation efforts, substantial room for improvement remains, particularly in public infrastructure and private households. The transport sector has also experienced sharp growth in consumption, with the number of registered cars increasing by nearly 60 % since 2010. To drive energy efficiency, the government has launched multiple support schemes funded through both national budgets and EU resources.
