See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows total economic losses from weather- and climate-related extreme events (such as windstorms, flooding, heatwaves, cold spells, droughts or wildfires) per country and per year (since 1980). A moving average for the previous 30 years is added because of the large interannual variability of the losses.
The trend of climate-related losses is characterised by significant uncertainty, primarily due to its dependence on unpredictable phenomena. This uncertainty is evident in the historical data, where recorded economic losses have demonstrated considerable volatility. The most substantial losses occurred in 2006. From 2006 onwards, climate-related economic losses exhibited a downward trend, with a slight increase in 2019–2022, followed by a minor decrease in 2023 compared with 2022. According to the biennial submitted by Slovakia in December 2024, prolonged droughts in the summer and autumn months associated with water scarcity may be a major consequence of climate change in Slovakia. Over the last 10–12 years, extreme daily rainfall events have been increasing, causing localised flooding in various parts of the country. The first adaptation policy document was the Strategy for Adaptation to the , which was approved by the Slovak government in 2014. and followed and were adopted in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
