See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of the EU’s agricultural land used for organic farming and the distance to the target of a 25% share as set by the European Green Deal.
In the last decade, Portugal has seen an upward trend in the area of agricultural land under organic production, with a 278.4% increase in 2022 compared with 2012, placing itself in the group of EU Member States with the highest proportion of agricultural area under this mode of production in 2021 (well above the EU average). A national strategy for organic agriculture and an action plan for the production and promotion of organic agricultural products and foodstuffs were set in place. Furthermore, the National Observatory for Organic Production was created, with its mission being to collect, process and disseminate information on the production, processing and commercialisation of organic products, including their consumption and the various existing markets. The latest information from this observatory indicates that Portugal had a huge increase in area under organic production in 2023 and 2024, and it is very close to exceeding the EU target well before 2030.
