See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption (FEC) in Norway is among the highest in the European Economic Area / European Free Trade Association area. This is mainly due to extensive use of renewable electricity in most sectors, including for heating private households. Approximately 98% of Norway’s electricity production is from either hydro or wind power. Over the last decade, the use of renewable energy for transport has steadily increased, predominantly due to the greater use of electricity and liquid biofuels.
Between now and 2030, the share of renewable energy in Norway’s gross FEC is expected to continue to grow substantially. The main contributing factors are increased electrification and the decarbonisation of various sectors, such as transport, construction, and land-based and offshore industry. The effects of accelerated decarbonisation are expected to be augmented by additional production of renewable energy from solar, wind and hydro sources. Planned decarbonisation initiatives seek to integrate various sectors into the electrical grid, further increasing the share of renewables in energy consumption.
