See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of material recovered and fed back into the economy – and thus saving extraction of primary raw materials – in overall material use.
Data on Norway’s circular material use rate are not currently available. However, in alignment with the EU, this indicator will be included in Norway’s monitoring framework on the circular economy. Data are expected to be available by the end of 2025.
In 2023, Norway reported on reuse in alignment with the EU’s Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC). The report shows that 13 203 tonnes of textiles, 153 692 tonnes of furniture, 33 979 tonnes of electronic products and 209 810 tonnes of construction materials and products were placed on the market for reuse in 2021. At present, there are no data on how much market share comprises reused items.
In 2021, Norway’s overall rate of domestic material consumption was approximately 22 39 tonnes per capita. Norway needs to increase its material recovery rates to comply with EU regulations for municipal waste and construction and demolition waste. The EU aims for 55% of household and similar commercial waste to be prepared for reuse or recycled by 2025. In 2022, Norway was about 13 percentage points below this 2025 target. For construction and demolition waste, the EU’s goal was to have 70% prepared for reuse or recycled by 2020. However, in 2022, only 59.8% of Norway’s construction and demolition waste was prepared for reuse or recycled.
