See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
In the latest national energy and climate plan, the goal is to achieve a 42.5% share of renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2030. To achieve this, starting from 2022, the share of renewable energy should increase by an estimate of 3.0% yearly. This would be achieved by increasing the share of renewables in the electric energy sector to 66% by 2030, the share in heating and cooling to 45% and the share in transport (not including electric vehicles) to 9%, ultimately aiming for a share of 17%. To increase the share of renewables in the electricity energy sector to 66%, the share of renewable energy in currently installed electricity generation capacity should reach up to 85% by 2030. This installed capacity would be made up of 54% hydropower, 33% photovoltaics, 12% wind energy and the remaining 1% biogas and biomass thermoelectricity. When extrapolating the current trend, for 2022–2030, there would be a growth of only 0.2% annually. Therefore, North Macedonia needs to follow up on investments across sectors and plans for the installed capacity for electric energy, and improve conditions to stimulate the investments in renewable energy for heating and cooling and transport, as mentioned above.
