See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of the EU’s agricultural land used for organic farming and the distance to the target of a 25% share as set by the European Green Deal.
Based on national data, target projections remain at 2% for organic produce in the sector. These numbers are far from the targets for 2030 (25%).
We are learning from EU market experiences, developing public procurement for organic produce for schools and strengthening awareness of the benefits of organic food. Support is in place for producers to better penetrate the domestic market and improve cooperation for efficient logistics, marketing and sales. Market demand for organic produce is linked to overall consumer awareness and the strength of European markets. A key incentive for national producers is making higher market prices achievable, instead of having to rely on government subsidies.
A national system is in place that aims to support producers through financial incentives, permit-issuing processes, access to organic semen and materials, measures to protect crops and yields, and stricter control measures. There is support for research activities to better assess resource potential, while not undermining nationally designated protected areas. The diversification of primary produce and production volume is emphasised as key for turnover and profit. National awareness and recognition of the added health benefits these products offer consumers is also important.
