See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows total economic losses from weather- and climate-related extreme events (such as windstorms, flooding, heatwaves, cold spells, droughts or wildfires) per country and per year (since 1980). A moving average for the previous 30 years is added because of the large interannual variability of the losses.
Climate-related economic losses in the Netherlands amounted to . This was considerably lower than the EU average (see graph). The losses show considerable variation, reaching a maximum of EUR 35/capita in 1998, 1999 and 2021 and a minimum of EUR 5/capita in 2012.
Over 1980–2022, almost 84% was related to meteorological hazards like storms, some 16% to hydrological hazards like flooding and less than 1% to .
As climate change continues to progress, it will become increasingly important to think carefully about the distribution of the costs associated with climate change hazards among citizens, insurance companies and governments. The Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy calls on the government to develop a government vision on voluntary disadvantage compensation for climate hazards, so that citizens know what to expect and insurers .
