The area under organic farming has increased slightly since 2016. Still, the share in total agricultural area usage ) and is significantly below the EU average. The target of a 25 % share for the area under organic farming by 2030 is ambitious, suggesting the need for extreme effort to reach it. Therefore, support for organic production through Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance in and EUR 650 000 has been provided to help fulfil this potential for further development and expansion.
Following this increase, in 2021, the percentage of registered organic farming households The upward trend continued . However, a lot of producers grow food in the manner of organic production but do not certify their products, indicating that the percentage could be even higher. Organic food is mostly sold on the local market, and the public is keen to purchase it.
Montenegro is currently working on better aligning national legislation with related EU laws and on the adoption of a new law on organic production (with by-laws), which will ensure the further development of this branch along .
