Luxembourg’s national indicative targets, as set out in the updated National Energy and , include a 42 % reduction in final energy consumption (FEC) by 2030 compared with a reference scenario, which corresponds to a 16.2 % reduction in FEC compared with 2020. In short, Luxembourg’s FEC should be reduced by 29.1 % by 2030 compared with 2005.
In recent years, Luxembourg has made significant progress in decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Despite exceptionally high population and GDP growth, the energy intensity of the economy has fallen by around 52 % over the last two decades.
The services sector has achieved the greatest reduction in energy intensity of all the economic sectors, while the residential sector has some catching up to do. Further action will be needed to reach the 2030 targets.
