See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows total economic losses from weather- and climate-related extreme events (such as windstorms, flooding, heatwaves, cold spells, droughts or wildfires) per country and per year (since 1980). A moving average for the previous 30 years is added because of the large interannual variability of the losses.
In Luxembourg, flooding is the main climatic risk that could affect a large number of people. Flood risk and hazard maps for the 17 main rivers show that an HQ10 flood (an event occurring once every 10 years on average) would affect 4 401 ha of land, an HQ100 flood (an event occurring once every 100 years on average) would affect 5 956 ha and an HQext flood (an extreme flood) would affect 7 029 ha. Luxembourg covers an area of 258 600 ha. According to the second flood risk management plan, , 4 211, 12 392 and 20 998 people could be affected by such floods, respectively, representing 3.35 % of the population. Monetary estimates of the potential financial cost of property damage reached just over EUR 1 billion, considering the HQext for the 17 identified watercourses. For the principal rivers alone, the Alzette, Moselle and Sûre, the potential damage could reach EUR 880 million. However, these figures are only estimates at the upper end of the scale, as it is unlikely that all rivers will reach HQext simultaneously.
To determine the real impact of economic losses, the draft climate adaptation strategy for 2025–2035, which is currently under discussion, proposes taking an inventory of public expenditure relating to extreme weather events.
