See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The national renewable energy sources (RESs) target in Kosovo was set by the Ministerial Council of the Energy Community in 2012, and confirmed through the adoption of secondary legislation by the Ministry of Economy of Kosovo. The share of renewable energy in Kosovo has increased moderately in the past few years. In 2020, Kosovo surpassed its 25 % RES share target. This increase in RESs is mainly due to an increase in the production of electricity and heating, represented by .
Despite this increase, the share of renewables in final energy consumption remains low (19 % in 2022) compared with EU targets. Speeding up by a factor of 11.9 is needed to meet the . It is projected that in 2030 the electricity production from RESs will reach 261 ktoe, of which the highest share will be wind, with 55 %, followed by solar, with 32 %, and hydro, with 12 %. Regarding the installed capacity for electricity generation, 59 % in 2030 will be from RESs. Biomass will remain the dominant RES fuel in the heating and cooling sector, with a share of 92 % in 2030, which will gradually be reduced to .
