In Hungary, the trends in final energy consumption between 2005 (100%) and 2023 (90.9%) were primarily influenced by energy efficiency measures, the changes in energy prices, the reduced utility rate, economic growth and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and weather. In 2023, the residential sector represented the largest share of final consumption with 28.6%, followed by transport with 26.4% and industry with 21.4%.
The energy consumption of households is primarily influenced by the need for heating and cooling. In line with this, there is significant energy-saving potential in the modernisation of buildings and heating. In recent years, a number of measures and support programmes have helped to improve household energy efficiency and to shape energy-conscious attitudes.
Hungary’s Energy Productivity Index increased by 68% between 2000 and 2022, due to a significant transformation in the structure of the economy and an increase in the efficiency of energy production and use.
