See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
Greece has made significant progress in the production and use of renewable energy, with wind and solar power driving this transition. 2023 marked a historic milestone in Greece’s clean energy production, with 57% of the energy mix being supplied by RESs (wind and solar) and hydroelectric units, surpassing 25 TWh. In 2023, the annual production of green energy reached a decade-high, touching 21.35 TWh and marking a 147% increase compared with the annual RES electricity production in 2014 (8.64 TWh). The highest monthly production from RESs in the history of the electrical system occurred in August 2023, reaching 2.25 TWh.
Building on these achievements, Greece has made successive leaps in its energy transition, emerging as a pioneer in the EU. The country exceeded the targets set in its first NECP in 2019 for RES penetration and GHG emission reductions. This progress allows Greece to set even more ambitious energy and climate targets under the revised NECP, with clear goals for 2030 and a strategic framework extending to 2050. These milestones demonstrate Greece’s commitment to advancing its clean energy agenda and leading the way in sustainable energy transformation.
