See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
Between 2005 and 2008, the share of renewable energy in the gross final energy consumption of Cyprus increased by around 64%, while between 2009 and 2018 it did so by more than 137%, bringing the share to a total of 20.21% in 2023. These increases were due to continuous investments, especially in solar energy technologies.
At the sectoral level, the largest growth in renewable energy sources (RESs) was observed in the heating and cooling sector, where the share in 2023 reached 42.75%, placing Cyprus in 9th place among the EU-27.
According to Directive (EU) 2023/2413 on the promotion of RESs, the mandatory EU target is 42.5% RESs in the gross final consumption of the EU by 2030 and, according to the sharing mechanism set out in the Governance Regulation, Cyprus needs to achieve 33% RESs. More information on the current utilisation of RESs in Cyprus and the policies and measures planned for achieving the national 2030 target for them (with a timeline and trajectory up to 2030) can be found in the national energy and climate plan.
