See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of material recovered and fed back into the economy – and thus saving extraction of primary raw materials – in overall material use.
Cyprus’ circular material use rate was 2% in 2010 and 3.8% in 2020, compared to the EU averages of 10.7% and 11.2% respectively. To address this, the new industrial policy of Cyprus for 2019–2030 aims to implement a circular economy to increase competitiveness and new opportunities. Under the policy, the national action plan for the circular economy was adopted in 2021, covering the period until 2027. The action plan includes a number of programmes aiming to provide information about the prospects and business opportunities offered by the circular economy, finance the development of new circular products and services, promote industrial symbiosis and synergies, boost investments in the circular economy in businesses and the tourism sector, enable the creation of online material-sharing platforms and promote the development of standards and certification for management systems, products and services contributing to the circular economy. In addition, a number of the measures in the action plan focus on the management of waste as a resource and increasing the separate collection of municipal waste and therefore the quality of recycling.
