See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved a 36.6% share of renewable energy in its gross final energy consumption, in line with the general positive trend towards its renewable energy target. In terms of total gross electricity production from renewable energy sources (RESs), hydropower plants contributed 44.8%, thermal power plants contributed 50.6%, and solar and wind power plants contributed 4.6%. There is significant technical potential for RESs in Bosnia and Herzegovina: 2 963.7 MW of energy from solar power, 13 141 MW from wind power and 6 110 MW from hydropower. The total possible installed capacity of geothermal sources in Bosnia and Herzegovina is 9.3 MWt (for heating) or 90.2 MWt (for heating, recreational and balneological needs).
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s target for its RESs share is 43.6% by 2030. The National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) envisages doubling renewable energy capacity, with the installation of more than 2 000 MW of new capacity by 2030 (including 1 500 MW for solar projects). In addition, new laws on RESs were adopted in both entities and the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, transposing, among others, the provisions of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. The laws enable the reform of the incentive system and introduce new actors – prosumers and renewable energy communities – that can contribute to the overall target and also be involved in the market, leading to the democratisation of energy.
