Recently, for the first time, the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted complete waste treatment data to Eurostat, fulfilling the conditions for calculating the circular material use rate. The economy of Bosnia and Herzegovina consumed 38.7 Mt of natural resources in 2022 (6.8% more than in the 2015 base year). Domestic extraction of non-metallic minerals increased by 34.2%, mostly in the extraction of building sand and gravel, limestone, gypsum and salt.
The value of direct material input into the economy in 2022 (including both domestic extraction and import) was 5.3% higher than in 2021, while domestic material consumption in the country was 1.4% higher.
As a resource-intensive economy, Bosnia and Herzegovina has the potential to achieve significant economic benefits by implementing the circular economy model. Recently, there has been an evident increase in initiatives and support related to circular economy in the country, including through the creation of strategic and regulatory frameworks. Numerous companies include some elements of circularity in their operations, to a larger or smaller degree. Work on drafting the 2021–2027 roadmap for circular economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently ongoing.
