See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the total generated amount of all types of waste from all economic sectors and households, and compares it with economic development measured as gross domestic product (GDP).
Total waste generation in Austria increased from 5 596 kg/capita in 2010 to 8 079 kg/capita in 2022 (+ 44.4%). The trend is significantly influenced by the increase in the generated amount of major mineral waste comprising excavated materials and construction and demolition waste in 2010–2019 (+ 43.7%).
Compared with 2020, the amount decreased by 3.7% in 2023, following increases in 2021 and 2022. The decline in per capita waste generation in 2023 was primarily due to a recession-related reduction in economic activity, particularly in the construction sector, and thus to a decrease in construction and demolition waste.
The trend for generated waste excluding major mineral waste shows an increase of 3.9% between 2018 and 2022, but household and similar waste types decreased by 0.9%.
From 2018 to 2022, the gross domestic product per capita (measured in current prices) increased by 14.1% and total waste generation per capita increased by 8.8%. The strong increase in gross domestic product per capita is partly due to the rise in prices in recent years.
