See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The Albanian government considers the promotion of renewable energy use an important tool for energy policies that aim to increase energy supply security, economic development, energy sector sustainability and environment protection. The share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the overall energy supply of Albania is largely accounted for by hydropower and firewood. The Albanian government has been focused on the diversification of its supply of energy including through other RESs, such as biomass, solar energy and wind energy. The aim of the national energy strategy 2018–2030 is for the proportion of RESs to reach 42% of total energy consumption in 2030. In 2004, the share of RESs in final consumption was 29.6%. Since 2019, Albania has made progress in the continuous growth of this indicator, with the RES share reaching 46.6% in 2023. This was achieved by implementing the national action plan for RESs. Albania has already achieved the EU’s 2030 target. The 2021 national energy and climate plan (NECP) aims to achieve an RES share of 54.4% in final energy demand, as projected with additional measures for 2030.
