In Albania, the most important energy fuels are oil products and firewood. The use of electricity by consumers in the residential and business sectors is high and so are network losses. Other sectors that contribute to energy consumption are transport, agriculture, industry, households and services. The transport sector consumes the largest amount of energy, followed by the residential sector and the industry sector. Final energy consumption in Albania increased gradually between 2009 and 2011. Energy consumption also increased significantly in 2014, driven mainly by the iron and steel industry sectors. The residential sector is responsible for 49% of total electricity consumption in Albania, making it the sector with the highest electricity consumption. The national energy strategy 2018–2030 presents the basic scenario for 2014–2030, which shows that final energy consumption will increase to 3 868 ktoe; it also sets the target of a reduction in final energy consumption of 15.5% by 2030. During 2021–2023, there was a reduction in energy consumption from 106.7% to 102.1% (with reference to the consumption in 2005). Albania must take measures to reduce annual energy consumption if it is to achieve the EU target.
