RN21 is an integrated project focused on the Portuguese natural resin sector. Natural resin is a bio product harvested from Pinus pinaster trees through tapping, a non-destructive forest activity with long tradition in the centre and north of Portugal.

RN21 aims to advance the Portuguese natural resin sector with an integrated approach covering the entire value chain, from the forest to the market. Gathering 37 partners from resin exploration, the industry transformation, market, academy, Forest Producers Organizations and Non-Profit Organization, in an unprecedent collaborative effort to promote natural resin.

This integrated project is based on 22 research activities ranging from fundamental research to industrial scale-up. All the activities promoted by RN21 are aimed at improving Pinus pinaster forests, increasing economic resilience though sustainable bioeconomy. The new products under development will incorporate derivatives of natural resin, replacing fossil-based materials, promoting carbon neutrality and fostering a resilient and productive forest.
