Causes of loss of coastal ecosystems
Between 2000 and 2006:
- 8 km2 of coastal ecosystems (dunes, salt marshes andsalines) were lost with around 65 % of the change due to coastal erosion and 16 % due to sprawl of economic sites and infrastructure such as airports;
- 26 km2 of coastal ecosystems (intertidal flats, lagoons and estuaries) were gained through the creation and management of water bodies.
