Approximated estimates for the share of gross final consumption of renewable energy sources in 2021 (EEA 2021 RES share proxies)

Additional information
This current data set concerns the EEA 2021 RES share proxies. The RES share proxy data are presented per Member State and for the European Union as a whole, as total RES share (Total RES share proxy), share of renewable sources in gross final electricity consumption (RES-E proxy), share of renewable sources in gross final heating and cooling energy consumption (RES-H/C proxy) and share of renewable sources consumed in transport (RES-T proxy). The shares are calculated in accordance with the methodology under Directive 2009/28/EC. From 2022, the recast Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 modifies the methodology to account for the renewable energy share, especially the statistical multipliers available to Member States to promote certain forms of renewable energy use in transport. The current EEA estimates still use the old approach and multipliers - the new approach will be incorporated starting with 2023. The EEA 2021 RES share proxies formed the basis of a specific EEA country consultation. Where reported by countries during consultation, national data were used. Nevertheless, the proxy data do not substitute or data that countries officially report to Eurostat and to the European Commission in the context of their legal obligations.
