The CORINE Land Cover (CLC) inventory was initiated in 1985 (reference year 1990) to standardize data collection on land in Europe to support environmental policy development. Updates were produced in 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018. Change layers were produced for 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018.

Access to data is based on a principle of full, open and free access as established by the Copernicus data and information policy Regulation (EU) No 1159/2013 of 12 July 2013. This regulation establishes registration and licensing conditions for GMES/Copernicus users. Free, full and open access to this data set is made on the conditions that:

Dashboard (Tableau) Land cover and change accounts 2000-2018 This interactive data viewer provides an easy and comprehensive access to land cover accounts for Europe (EEA39 and EU28) derived from the CORINE land cover data series. Statistics are calculated for every 6 years of the acquisition period, as well as for the entire period (2000-2018). The viewer facilitates the assessment of land cover consumed or created over a specific period and the reason for the observed change (e.g. urban sprawl or arable land loss), which can be analyzed within user defined spatial units such as administrative regions, biogeographical regions or land cover classes.
Dashboard (Tableau) Land take and net land take This interactive data viewer provides a set of dashboards giving an overview of the land take and net land take processes for Europe (EEA39 and EU28) derived from the CORINE land cover data series. Statistics are derived for every 6 years of the acquisition period, as well as for the entire period (2000-2018). The viewer facilitates the assessment of land take over a specific period as well as the land use drivers of the observed changes, which can be analyzed within user defined spatial units such as administrative regions, biogeographical regions or land cover classes.

Figure Granularity of Corine Land Cover (left) and Urban Atlas (right) data for Helsinki, Malaga and Varna The map composition intends to show the different granularity, i.e. spatial resolution, between Corine Land Cover and Urban Atlas datasets, providing three examples in three different cities from different countries.
Figure Forest land cover change in the EEA-39, 2000-2018 The map shows the loss and gain of forests aggregated in a 10 km grid. Units are in ha/km2. The following CLC classes were used: Consumption of transitional woodland (LCF71), Consumption caused by forest and shrub fires (LCF92), Consumption caused by forest management (LCF74), Afforestation (LCF72), Forest-internal conversion (LCF71, LCF73 and part of LCF74), Withdrawal of farming with woodland creation (LCF61), Total formation of forest.
Figure Spatial pattern of land take in the EEA-39, 2000-2018 Land take as a result of urban sprawl is measured from the Copernicus Corine Land Cover dataset between 2000-2018. The map shows for each grid cell the area in km2 which was converted to urban areas. For visualization land take data is presented in a 10km grid. The original data which statistics are derived from is from the 100m spatial resolution CLC dataset series.
Figure Arable land and permanent crops land cover change in the EEA-39, 2000-2018 The map shows the loss and gain of arable land and permanent crops aggregated in a 10 km grid. The following CLC classes were used: 211 Non-irrigated arable land, 212 Permanently irrigated land, 213 Rice fields, 221 Vineyards, 222 Fruit trees and berry plantations, 223 Olive groves, 241 Annual crops associated with permanent crops.

Figure Country comparison: land take and land recultivation in EEA39 in the period 2012-2018 (in proportion of country area). The chart shows the area of land take and recultivation for the last Corine Land Cover observation period 2012-2018 for each EEA39 country. Both land take and recultivation are expressed in m2/km2 of the country area for the sake of comparability.

Figure Arable land and permanent crops gains and losses between 2000 and 2018 This map shows the loss and gain of arable land and permanent crops. Changes are monitored at 1 ha level whereas the map is aggregated in a 10 km2 grid.
