HiWATE is an FP6-funded project investigating the potential human health risks associated with long-term exposure to low levels of disinfectants and disinfectant by-products (DBPs) occurring in water for human consumption and use in the food industry.
This Open Day will give an overview of the current state of DBP research and the main findings of the HiWATE project.

Nizhny Novgorod has a population of 1.3 million and is one of Russia's most important industrial cities. Its process manufacturing plants are heavily reliant on water, supplied from the Volga River and one of its tributaries, the Oka. The region's drinking water also comes from the Upper Volga Basin.

Bringing together environmental data with feedback and observations of millions of ordinary people
Quickly check on locations and statistics on quality for coastal and freshwater bathing waters.
National and international river basin water districts
Provides easily accessible key environmental data from industrial facilities in European Union Member States and in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. For each facility, information is provided concerning the amounts of pollutant releases to air, water and land as well as off-site transfers of waste and of pollutants in waste water from a list of 91 key pollutants including heavy metals, pesticides, greenhouse gases and dioxins for the year 2007.

As part of their partnership combining cutting-edge technology and environmental data, Microsoft Corp and the European Environment Agency (EEA) have expanded their Eye On Earth portal. A new application, AirWatch provides information on air quality to more than 500 million people across Europe. For the first time, EEA brings together both measured and modelled data alongside citizens' observations on air quality.

The European Commission and the European Environment Agency today launched a comprehensive new European pollutant release and transfer register – E-PRTR. The register contains information about the quantity and location of pollutants released to air, water and land by industrial facilities throughout Europe. It includes annual data for 91 substances and covers more than 24 000 facilities in 65 economic activities. It also provides additional information, such as the amount and types of waste transferred from facilities to waste handlers both inside and outside each country.

Spanning the centre of continental Europe, the Alps play a crucial role in accumulating and supplying water to the continent. As such, they deliver vital ecosystem services both within and beyond the region, underpinning social and economic wellbeing in vast lowland areas. Troublingly, the alpine climate has changed significantly during the past century, with temperatures increasing more than twice the global average. Drawing on the most recent knowledge of climate change impacts in the Alps and experiences across the region, this report analyses the risks that climate change presents to the region's water supply and quality, identifying needs, constraints, opportunities, policy levers and options for adaptation. It extracts policy guidance on adaptation practice and aims to assist regional and local stakeholders in developing robust adaptation strategies.

As the ‘water towers of Europe’, the Alps play a crucial role in sustaining the social and economic wellbeing of millions of people living in vast lowland areas. A complex and vulnerable ecosystem, they represent Europe’s central landmark.

The EU Bathing Waters Directive requires Member States to identify popular bathing places in fresh and coastal waters and monitor them for indicators of microbiological pollution (and other substances) throughout the bathing season which runs from May to September
New bathing water directive, shellfish water directive, public health and hygiene measures…
Europe has revised its directives and fixed new goals, putting the quality of its coastal waters at the top of its list of concerns.
In this context, the SMBCG (French public entity formed by local communities in the Granville Coastal Basin), in charge of water quality protection and the “MARECLEAN” Life Environment project, is organizing a European conference in Granville with its partners (E.U., Veolia Eau, Veolia Environnement, IFREMER, Météo France, French Water Agency, IRH Ingénieur Conseil, SAUR…) to provide a complete overview of the reduction in the quality of coastal waters in wet weather, on 30th September and 1st October 2009.
The conference will focus on the theme of the pollution of coastal waters, including:
- a summary of the regulations and the latest developments introduced by the new directives
- the methods available of identifying these pollution phenomena (definition, identification and grading of the sources of contamination)
- the solutions developed to date, encouraging active management and sustainable preventive measures in these coastal waters
- public information and management issues
There will be a total of 36 sessions during the 2 days of the conference which will permit an experience feedback from France, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal and Holland.
Simultaneous interpretation could be provided throughout the conference in English and French.

Concentrations are expressed as annual mean concentrations for groundwater, and station weighted mean of annual mean concentrations for rivers and lakes
