Term

Topology is a branch of geometry concerned with the study of topological spaces. (The term topology is also used for a set of open sets used to define topological spaces). Most of the GIS (Geography Information System) layers use simple topology: point, line, polygon and region. Objects of real world are simplified in map by these topological elements e.g. lakes by polygons, roads by lines, wells by points etc.
