Policy issue:  Are we reaching emission targets for ozone precursors?

Key assessment

The EU15 emissions of NMVOC have been reduced by 32% between 1990 and 2001. The decrease between 2000 and 2001 was 1.8%. Significant emissions arise from road transport from combustion and petrol evaporation (27% of the 2001 total emissions). Other important sources include domestic and commercial combustion, solvent use in paints, glues and other products as well as printing and vehicle spraying (41% of 1999 totals). Fugitive sources such as petroleum transportation and storage, manufacturing industry and agricultural sources contribute 8%, 10% and 6% respectively to the 2001 EU emissions of NMVOC.
