OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. This exhibition, which is being organised by the European Commission, illustrates the difference between applying European proposals in order to mitigate climate change and taking no action at all. Intervention by EEA Executive Director, Professor Jacqueline McGlade, the 17th at 16.30

Two giant ice-blocks are displayed on the stand. The first one, which includes a European flag, melts at a slower pace, illustrating the results of climate change when action is taken to cut CO2 emissions and use energy more efficiently: the ice still melts and water levels rise, but the effects remain manageable and life can continue. The second ice-block melts at a much faster rate, resulting in a dramatic rise in sea levels and a significant impact on our living conditions. This scenario represents a world in which no action has been taken against climate change.

The EEA's Executive Director, Professor Jacqueline McGlade, will discuss the implications of this issue with the organisers (Thursday 17th at 16.30).
