This figure identifies the net greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from the management of municipal solid waste (MSW) from 1990 to 2020. Emissions from the waste management are split into different treatment options (recycling, incineration, landfilling and transportation) and into direct and avoided emissions.
Raw data on past and forecasted generation and treatment waste quantitites are simulated in a model in order to produce the corresponding greenhouse gas emissions for each country and for each treatment option. The direct emissions are the ones directly emitted by waste management activities while avoided emissions refer to avoided production of primary energy or materials which are avoided because of recycling or energy recovery of MSW.
