Methodology:
All country UMZs were derived from CLC1990, except for Malta and Sweden. These two country UMZs were derived from CLC2000. For the Baltic region bad geometry was corrected using the new corrected CLC1990. Population data came from GISCO settlements (created 1995, updated 2000). For more details see methodology pdf.

The land cover classes are: 1.1.1 Continuous urban fabric Urban 1.1.2 Discontinuous urban fabric 1.2.1 Industrial or commercial units 1.2.2 Road and rail networks and associated land 1.4.1 Green urban areas 1.4.2 Sport and leisure facilities 1.2.2 and 1.4.2 were only considered when adjecent to at least one of the other classes.
