External datasets catalogue

Catalogue of all external data references used by EEA products such as indicators, maps, graphs and publications. For "external data" we intend data that is not directly produced and managed by EEA, rather provided by other organisations. External Data Spec Attitudes of Europeans towards air quality — 13 Jan 2014
Air quality is a major concern for Europeans, and is an area where the EU has been particularly active for more than 30 years. The EU's key objective in relation to air quality is "to achieve levels of air quality that do not result in unacceptable impacts on, and risks to, human health and the environment." The EU has already in place a range of legislation and initiatives to improve air quality by controlling harmful emissions and implementing measures in the transport, industry and energy sectors to protect the environment. In addition, air pollution is one of the key issues included as part of the European Commission's proposal for a new Environment Action Programme (EAP) to 2020, "Living well, within the limits of our planet".
External Data Spec Plastic Debris in the World’s Oceans — 13 Jan 2014
Solid materials, typically waste, that has found its way to the marine environment is called marine debris. It is probably a common conception that marine debris consists of just a few pieces of rubbish scattered along the strand line of beaches and is of no harm to anyone. Unfortunately this is not the case. Marine debris has become a pervasive pollution problem affecting all of the world’s oceans. It is known to be the cause of injuries and deaths of numerous marine animals and birds, either because they become entangled in it or they mistake it for prey and eat it. Plastic and synthetic materials are the most common types of marine debris and cause the most problems for marine animals and birds. At least 267 different species are known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of marine debris including seabirds, turtles, seals, sea lions, whales and fish.
External Data Spec D source code Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear — 13 Jan 2014
Fishing gear has been lost, abandoned or otherwise discarded in all seas and oceans ever since fishing began. The extent and impacts of the problem have increased significantly over the last 50 years with the increasing levels of fishing effort and capacity in the world’s oceans and the increasing durability of fishing gear. Fishing activity has now extended to previously untouched offshore and deep-sea environments, which are often very sensitive to the impacts of abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG).
External Data Spec Implementing EU waste legislation for green growth — 13 Jan 2014
The report aims at providing an in-depth analysis of the expected benefits of better implementation and enforcement of EU waste legislation, and the means with which this can be achieved.
External Data Spec Being wise with waste: the EU’s approach to waste management — 13 Jan 2014
Waste is an issue that aff ects us all. We all produce waste: on average, each of the 500 million people living in the EU throws away around half a tonne of household rubbish every year. This is on top of huge amounts of waste generated from activities such as manufacturing (360 million tonnes) and construction (900 million tonnes), while water supply and energy production generate another 95 million tonnes. Altogether, the European Union produces up to 3 billion tonnes of waste every year.
External Data Spec D source code In 2011, 40% of treated municipal waste was recycled or composted, up from 27% in 2001 — 13 Jan 2014
In the EU27, 503 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2011, while 486 kg of municipal waste was treated per person. This municipal waste was treated in different ways: 37% was landfilled, 23% incinerated, 25% recycled and 15% composted, compared with 56% landfilled, 17% incinerated, 17% recycled and 10% composted in 2001.
External Data Spec Global food losses and food waste — 13 Jan 2014
The study highlights the losses occurring along the entire food chain, and makes assessments of their magnitude. Further, it identifies causes of food losses and possible ways of preventing them. The results of the study suggest that roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tons per year. This inevitably also means that huge amounts of the resources used in food production are used in vain, and that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by production of food that gets lost or wasted are also emissions in vain.
External Data Spec Preparatory study on food waste across EU 27 — 13 Jan 2014
Addressing a lack of information about food waste in Europe. Food waste is composed of raw or cooked food materials and includes food loss before, during or after meal preparation in the household, as well as food discarded in the process of manufacturing, distribution, retail and food service activities. It comprises materials such as vegetable peelings, meat trimmings, and spoiled or excess ingredients or prepared food as well as bones, carcasses and organs.
