1,1,1-trichloroethane is a colourless man-made chemical that has a sweet, yet sharp odour. It can be found as a liquid, as a vapour, or dissolved in water and other chemicals. It is highly volatile and so readily enters the atmosphere. It is non-flammable, so making it preferable in some applications to flammable alternatives.
