For comparison, two index lines (1990 value = 100) are included: the first refers to country specific emissions, while the second expresses total EU emissions.
Switzerland’s greenhouse gas emissions remained roughly stable between 1990 and 2010, despite population and gross domestic product . Since 2010, emission levels have been slightly decreasing, reaching 74% of the 1990 level in 2023. The interannual variability is, in particular, a consequence of weather conditions influencing fuel consumption for heating purposes. The largest contribution to the decrease since 2010 comes from the building sector, .
Switzerland has committed to reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, corresponding to an average reduction of at least 35% over 2021–2030. This includes all sectors (including LULUCF), indirect CO2, and considering the use of cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. and the set out the policies and measures needed to continue and accelerate Switzerland’s efforts to mitigate its domestic greenhouse gas emissions.
