Share of renewable energy in final energy consumption

The share of renewable energy (electricity and heat) in final energy consumption has risen continuously in Switzerland since 2000. Growth has accelerated since the mid 2000s, largely due to the expansion of photovoltaics. The increase in the use of ambient heat and biofuels has generally also contributed to this positive trend. According to Swiss renewable energy statistics, the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption was 28 % ⁽ⁱ⁾.

As part of its energy and climate policy, Switzerland has set target values for electricity production from renewable energy (excluding hydropower) and for . Energy policy measures such as the , ,  and  create optimal conditions for the rapid expansion of renewable energy in Switzerland. At the same time, these legislative instruments provide a framework to ensure that the expansion of renewable energy does not come at the expense of other nature conservation objectives (see ‘Assessing systemic change – the energy system’).
