In organic farming, production is based as much as possible on closed cycles and the use of environmentally sustainable methods. The use of chemical/synthetic fertilisers and plant protection products is prohibited or limited. To avoid over-fertilisation, organic farmers adapt livestock density to the capacity of the surrounding ecosystem. Therefore, an increase in organic farming is good for biodiversity. Organic farming increases the quality of the semi-natural areas surrounding the farm and helps to improve the state of biodiversity . In Switzerland, around . Between 2012 and 2023, the proportion of usable agricultural area farmed organically rose from 11.6% to 18.2%, corresponding to an average annual increase . In Switzerland, the market share of , and organic production systems are actively supported through direct payments. It can therefore be expected that the growth of organic farming will continue.
