Greenhouse gas emissions and removals in land and forests

, with . Until 2014, its net negative emissions were high and showed a mostly upward trend, but in 2014–2018 there was an abrupt change. Emissions increased due to a number of natural disturbances, such as the sleet in 2014 that damaged , the subsequent spread of . After 2018, the trend improved due to lower felling rates (sanitary felling had increased after the sleet and the bark beetle outbreak). In recent years, the carbon sink levels have remained higher than – 4.000 kt of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂eq), amounting to – 4.291kt CO₂eq in 2023. Slovenia’s country-specific EU target (– 146kt CO₂eq) has been achieved.

Nevertheless, Slovenia intends to further improve forest sinks in the future by adapting the composition of tree species and by educating private forest owners .
