See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
Following EU legislation, Slovakia adopted the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan for 2021–2030 (NECP) and the Low-Carbon Development Strategy to 2030 with a view to 2050, aiming to contribute to the EU’s 2030 energy and climate objectives.
As revision process, Slovakia increased its 2030 renewable energy target to 25 % to better align it with the EU’s updated target of 42.5%.
Renewable electricity generation in Slovakia is predominantly based on hydropower, making it highly dependent on favourable hydrological conditions. The sectoral target for heating and cooling has largely been met due to the predominant use of solid biomass.
Since 2020, the increase in the share of renewable energy sources has been modest. In 2023, renewable energy accounted for 17% of Slovakia’s gross final energy consumption.
However, recent investments in cross-border interconnections, renewable energy projects and storage capacity under the Recovery and Resilience Plan are expected to accelerate the development and integration of renewable energy in Slovakia.
