See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the number of annual premature deaths attributable to exposure to fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and the related zero-pollution action plan objective for 2030. Premature deaths are derived from a health risk assessment approach based on World Health Organization Europe recommendations measuring the general impact of air pollution across a given population.
PM2.5 remains a health concern in Serbia despite gradual improvement
In December 2022, Serbia adopted a 2022–2020 , also including a national strategic document for air quality. While the average yearly concentration of particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5μm or less (PM2.5) at the national level shows a gradually declining trend for 2015–2023, the municipality-level implementation and enforcement of adopted air quality plans remain unsatisfactory, and communities struggle with lowering air pollution concentrations below limit values. The main source of increased levels of suspended particles – PM2.5 and particulate matter with a diameter of 10 μm or less (PM10), as almost the only ambient air quality parameter with seasonal exceedances – is household and district heating, with additional contributions from coal power plants and industry. Better air quality is one of the priorities of Serbia’s environmental protection policy. In the last five years, the state has invested EUR 550 million in air pollution reduction projects. In addition, state monitoring of air quality has been significantly improved, primarily by monitoring the concentrations of suspended particles – PM10 and PM2.5.
