Serbia prioritises energy efficiency to curb growing energy consumption
Final energy consumption in Serbia was at about the same level in 2023 as it was in 2005, after a temporary slight decrease in the years between (see graph). Final energy consumption in Serbia in 2022 was estimated at 9.6 Mtoe, an increase of 0.2Mtoe compared with 2005. The largest share of energy consumption was in the household sector, at 35.6%, followed by transport at 29.4% and industry at 21.1%. Serbia’s integrated national energy and climate plan states that improving energy efficiency is a key priority and the most economically effective and socially conscious approach to reducing final energy consumption. The plan sets the goal of a maximum of 9.6Mtoe for final energy consumption in 2030, and 14.68Mtoe for primary energy consumption in 2030. Serbia has also introduced a mechanism for providing subsidies for increasing energy efficiency, particularly for the renovation of energy-inefficient buildings. Similar policies and measures are also envisaged for both the industrial and transport sectors.
