See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
In Portugal, the share of renewable energy has been increasing – initially with a focus on hydro, wind and, more recently, solar energy – despite some fluctuations essentially due to the reduction in the Hydraulicity Index in dry years.
With a strong commitment to renewable energy and several policies to increase its use, in 2023 Portugal achieved a total share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption that was well above the European average, and this share has followed an upward trend in recent years (+ 15.7 percentage points compared with 2005).
Portugal’s EU target for 2020, 31%, was significantly exceeded. For 2030, within the national energy and climate plan update, Portugal has increased its target for the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption from 49% to 51%.
Portugal has defined the main drivers of work to achieve this target as the focus on the electrification of the economy and consumption, the development of installed capacity and renewable electricity generation, the strong market penetration of electric vehicles and other sustainable mobility solutions, the introduction of renewable gases, the introduction of high-efficiency technologies in various sectors and research and innovation regarding / the maturation of alternative cost reduction technologies.
