See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The share of energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption in Poland has been increasing over the years and amounted to nearly 17% in 2023. Since 2018, the data have included biomass burning in households, which affects the trend shown in the graph. In 2021, there was another change in the methodology that made the data incomparable with those of previous years. The updated national energy and climate plan aims to reach a 32.6% share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in gross final consumption by 2030. Most energy in Poland is used for heating purposes. According to projections, the share of RESs in the final energy consumption of the heating and cooling sector could reach 35.4% by 2030. Since 2007, the share of RESs in energy production has been increasing. Less than 5% of the primary energy used comes from renewable resources other than wood. From 2018 to 2022, the share of RESs in total primary energy production increased from 18.6% to 22.4%. Over the same period, the share of RESs in total national consumption increased by 10.1% and their share in gross final consumption increased by 8.8%. The government plans to build Poland’s first offshore wind farms and a nuclear power plant in the next few years. Financial mechanisms support the overhaul of heating systems. Heat pumps and solar photovoltaic systems have experienced incredible growth, making Poland one of the biggest markets for such installations.
