See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the final consumption of energy by end users for all energy uses.
Norway’s gross final energy consumption (FEC) in 2023 was 19.2 Mtoe and approximately 217 TWh based on additional national statistics. Colder temperatures in 2023 than in 2022 resulted in higher energy consumption by services and households, which was offset by the decrease in industry and transport. From 2000 to 2022, FEC rose by 7.5% due to higher production activity and population growth. However, more efficient energy consumption in households and buildings, a greater proportion of electric cars and structural changes towards less energy-intensive industries have constrained the growth in energy demand. Overall energy consumption in Norway is estimated to remain at about the same level in 2030. Electricity consumption is predicted to increase mostly in the energy-intensive industrial and construction sectors but be offset by more energy-efficient households, buildings and industrial processes and a decarbonised transport sector. There is a measure of uncertainty related to unpredictable growth in emerging industries, such as hydrogen production, battery production and data storage centres, which is expected to impact overall energy consumption in the future.
