Area under organic farming

European Environment Agency (EEA) data show a stable but relatively low percentage of area under organic farming. The national strategy’s main goal states that ‘the demand for organic food should be met by Norwegian organic production to the extent possible’. The revised strategy includes a 10% target for area under organic farming by 2032. Environmental policies in Norwegian agriculture have a broad approach thanks to judicial and economic measures. Key themes in national, regional and local programmes include reducing eutrophication, addressing climate change, maintaining agricultural landscapes and ensuring the sustainability of ecosystem roles, such as pollination and soil management. Long-term statistics pertaining to agricultural production (mainly livestock farming) that takes place in agricultural areas of high biological value are important. These include annual statistics on the traditional use and harvested area of semi-natural habitat types, such as meadows, natural pastures and coastal heathlands. All semi-natural habitat types in Norway are classified as threatened (on the Norwegian Red Lists), and a third of all threatened species in the country are found in semi-natural habitat types.
