Organic agricultural land in of the nations’ agricultural land in 2024 (compared with 4.4% in 2022; see graph). This was substantially below the EU average, due to a historical focus on intensive agriculture and livestock farming. Between 2011 and 2024, the area grew by 92%, from 47 000 ha to 91 000 ha. In 2024, the organic agricultural area consisted mainly of grassland (72 %) and arable land (2%), with open field horticulture and .
The Dutch government , with the ambition to increase the share of organic agricultural area to 15% or 300 000 ha by 2030; this deviates from the EU ambition of a 25% share for organic agricultural area by 2030. The action plan was developed with various stakeholders and takes into account the whole value chain, from farm to fork, to set the preconditions for this increase, focusing on three main aspects: improving consumer awareness and acceptance of organic products, developing and broadening the market for organic products and financial support, and improving access to knowledge for farmers wishing to transition to organic production.
