Organic farming in Luxembourg began developing 40 years ago. For more than a decade, organic farmers operated as a self-organised organic task force until the first national organic farming plan (PAN Bio 2025) was implemented , boosting the sector. Sales of organic products in Luxembourg’s food retail sector are steadily increasing (e.g. + 15.3 % in 2021).
In 2020, 4.6 % of the utilised agricultural area (UAA) cultivated by Luxembourg’s farmers was certified organic, rising to 6.2 % in 2022 and. However, around 10 % of this UAA is located outside the country. Therefore, considering only the UAA within Luxembourg, 7.7 % of the national . Luxembourg’s government plans to produce a new national organic farming plan for 2026–2030, with measures to help realise the target of 25 % of the UAA under organic farming by 2030.
The development of organic farming has mainly taken place in grassland-dominated livestock farms, . Luxembourg increased aid for organic land in 2020, and PAN Bio 2025 increased funding for organic food supply chain projects and to encourage the use of organic products in school meals, with the aim of attracting tomorrow’s consumers.
