See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
In Hungary, the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption increased from 6.9% in 2005 to 16.2% in 2013, reaching 17.1% in 2023. The amount of energy produced from renewable energy sources and waste doubled between 2005 and 2023. The share of renewable energy was influenced by the increase in total energy consumption and the decrease in the use of solid biomass.
In Hungary, renewable energy sources are primarily used for heat and electricity production, and to a lesser extent as biofuels. Biomass plays a significant role in Hungary’s renewable energy production. In recent years, solar power production, geothermal-based district heating production and the use of biofuels with a mandatory blending ratio have increased dynamically.
The amount of electricity produced from renewable energy sources and waste in Hungary quadrupled between 2005 and 2022, partly as a result of the mandatory feed-in tariff system introduced in 2003.
The objective of the 2024 update to the national energy and climate plan is to further increase the rate and share of renewable energy production and use.
